Tip of The Week: Event Lighting Tips

Lighting is HUGE in America and is slowly becoming more and more popular over here. One of America's premier lighting designers, Bentley Meeker, recently released his book "Light X Design: 20 Years of Lighting"  in which he offers an intimate look at some of the popular venues he has transformed. He has worked for over two decades in the event industry at the utmost highest level, lighting weddings for notable celebrities like Robert DeNiro, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Chelsea Clinton, as well as corporate events, runway fashion shows, television and movie premieres, concerts, prominent hotels and philanthropic functions. Here are Bentley Meeker's top 5 tips when it comes to lighting:

1. "Know and like your lighting person"
"This first tip seems obvious but is really important. You need to deal with this person directly, not through the decorator or wedding planner. There are no dress rehearsals with lighting so your lighting designer should understand who you are, your sensibilities and objectives."

2. "Think of lighting as transformative rather than augmentative"
Lighting is not an afterthought. It is actually the one thing that will transform your room from what it is during your walk through into what you want it to be during your wedding or reception."

3. "Opt for flattering colours"
"I find that people feel great in colours that make them look great. Pinks, ambers... do the trick nicely. Blues and greens do not..."

4. "Be cautious about technology"
"I find that high tech is often low look. People do a lot of things because they think it's cool {wireless LED's, etc...} but they don't consider that the coloring of the lighting or the quality of the light is second or third rate."

5. "Make EVERYTHING dimmer...
... than you think you should. The eye adjusts and it is quite beautiful when things are just right rather than slightly too bright..."
